Cooperation between expert knowledge and data mining discovered knowledge: Lessons learned
نویسندگان
چکیده
Expert systems are built from knowledge traditionally elicited from the human expert. It is precisely knowledge elicitation from the expert that is the bottleneck in expert system construction. On the other hand, a data mining system, which automatically extracts knowledge, needs expert guidance on the successive decisions to be made in each of the system phases. In this context, expert knowledge and data mining discovered knowledge can cooperate, maximizing their individual capabilities: data mining discovered knowledge can be used as a complementary source of knowledge for the expert system, whereas expert knowledge can be used to guide the data mining process. This article summarizes different examples of systems where there is cooperation between expert knowledge and data mining discovered knowledge and reports our experience of such cooperation gathered from a medical diagnosis project called Intelligent Interpretation of Isokinetics Data, which we developed. From that experience, a series of lessons were learned throughout project development. Some of these lessons are generally applicable and others pertain exclusively to certain project types.

Cooperation between Expert Knowledge and Data Mining Discovered Knowledge
Although expert elicited knowledge and data mining discovered knowledge appear to be completely opposite and competing solutions to the same problems, they are actually complementary concepts. Besides, together they maximize their individual qualities. This chapter highlights how each one profits from the other and illustrates their cooperation in existing systems developed in the medical domai...

متن کاملIntelligent lessons learned systems
Lessons learned processes have been deployed in commercial, government, and military organizations since the late 1980s to capture, store, disseminate, and share experiential working knowledge. However, recent studies have shown that software systems for supporting lesson dissemination do not effectively promote knowledge sharing. We found that the problems with these systems are related to the...

People-Finder Systems are knowledge repositories that attempt to manage knowledge by holding pointers to experts who possess specific knowledge within an organization. This paper presents insights from the development of Expert Seeker, an organizational People-Finder KMS that will be used to locate experts at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This paper discusses insight...
